Atticus Finch is a very kind man who believes that people should be treated equally. He chose to defend Tom Robinson. He believes that he is entitled to a fair trial even though he knows what the result will be. The Declaration of Independence says "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal." Atticus is a man with that honorable goal.
Atticus explains to Scout that just because he knows he is not going to win is not a reason not to try. He tells her he could not hold his head up in town, go to church, or tell his children to mind him if he did not at least try to defend Tom. Everyone deserves a fair trial. Atticus believes strongly in fair trials. In the end, America then and now often shows its ugly racism.
There are a few important reasons why Atticus believes he needs to defend Tom Robinson, even if it is not a popular thing to do. First, Atticus believes that Tom is innocent. Third, in a conversation with Scout, he states that he has to defend Tom Robinson, because his integrity is on the line. Actions speak louder than words. He is teaching Scout by this more than any lecture or reading could.
By their family, a child’s behavior can be influenced by their legacy. He was born with a set breed of men that doesn’t like to take anyone that was giving to him. The residents associate the family of being poor. He comes from a poor family so he doesn’t ask or receive anything because he knows he can’t pay it back. Atticus tells his family they are poor but there is always someone worse off than you. Sometimes farmers had no money and paid him with hickory nuts.
We can learn and care about what others think. This does not mean all of our actions should be based on that. That’s might not be the best decision. We might try to impress or act different around people. This might succeed at first but then we don’t know if they like who we really are. It can affect what we think about ourselves. Most people may care about what others may think. We should not do this all the time, even if we are afraid or tired. There are times we have to face our fears and other opinions and do what is right, even if it is different, especially in a good way.
These are some reasons why Atticus chose to defend Tom Robinson. We can all learn from him.
Everyone needs to be treated properly. Nobody should get left out because of family or race. We should only judge people by their actions.
