  1. Ms. Borg took her fourth grade Math Club on a field trip to the Science Museum. A total of 27 students and adults went on the trip.
On the way to the museum Miss Noether drove the school van with 11 students in it. The rest traveled by car with 3 people in each car.
On the way home each car carried 4 people.
How many rode in the van?
7
Explain how you solved the problem.
on the way to the museum: Miss N + 11 students = 12 people
27 people total -12 means 15 in cars, 3 per car means 5 cars
on the way home: 4 people per car x 5 cars = 20 people.
27 people total - 20 in cars leaves 7 for the van

At the first meeting of the math club, students decide that they would like to raise money to purchase puzzles and games for the math lab. They also agree to open the math lab every day after school. While some club members are tutoring students, other club members will sell lollipops just outside the lab.
Their advisor, Mrs. Germain, agrees to check out the price of lollipops at the local discount store. When the students arrive for the next meeting, she has the following chart on the board.

Mrs. Germain has also purchased one box of each type of lollipop. As the club members arrive, each of them is allowed to take one lollipop to eat during the meeting. Since the students are already familiar with the brands chosen, each selects his or her favorite brand.
The secretary of the club records the selections and later reports that 17 students chose Pop B, while only 8 students chose Pop A. Obviously there is a stronger preference for Pop B, so the students conclude that kids will be willing to pay more money for Pop B, and set its sale price at 75 cents apiece. The sale price of Pop A is set at 50 cents.
What will the profit be once the remaining lollipops are sold?
47.75
pop A starts with 75 students took 8 so 75-8 = 67 remain
pop B starts with 36 students took 17 so 36-17 = 19 remain
A profit = 67*.50
B profit = 19*.75
Total profit = 67*.50 + 19*.75 = 47.75
END
