Covey Habit 4: Thinking Win/Win

Thinking Win-Win is not about being nice, nor is it a quick-fix technique. It is a character-based code for human interactions and collaboration.”

-Stephen Covey

1. THERE ARE SIX PARADIGMS OF HUMAN INTERACTION:

a. Win/Win - where both parties benefit from an interaction.
b. Win/Lose – where you benefit at another’s expense.

c. Lose/Win - where you lose to appease someone else’s desires.
d. Lose/Lose – where both parties are only concerned about making the other person lose.

2. WIN-WIN IS ABOUT COOPERATION, NOT COMPETITION:

a. We’ve unfortunately as a society come to bench mark success against
others and praise those who can win in a competitive setting.
b. Focused on mutual, synergistic benefit for all those involved.
c. Being considerate and brave at the same time.
d. Can’t be afraid to call off the deal if not everyone can benefit.

3 DIMENSION OF WIN/WIN

a. Character - this is the personal principle of the individual compose of:

i. Integrity: the value we place on ourselves to uphold commitments.

ii. Maturity: the balance between courage and consideration

1. Courage: having guts to stand up for what you want.
2. Consideration - thinking of other’s desires.

iii. Abundance Mentality: the idea there is plenty for everyone to get what they want.
