Reconstruction
1. Much Southern land went to hospitals and railroads. Farms lost from war damage and slave loss
2. Confederate money worthless after the Civil War
3. Reconstruction 1865-1877 to slavery and inequalities
4. Lincoln 10 percent plan to readmit states with 10 percent swearing allegiance to Union
5. Lincoln unable to implement. He was assassinated in 1865.
6. President Andrew Johnson gave White South free hand. No role to blacks in politics.
7. Congress fought mass killing of ex-slaves and black codes. Seized control from Pres. A. Johnson
8. Black codes essentially suppressed freedom, replacing slave codes.
9. 3 amendments added to Constitution: 13) Abolished Slavery 14) Citizenship and equal rights and protection former slaves. 15) Right to VOTE for former slaves.
10. Union helped South during Reconstruction by insuring laws were followed in South.
11. Carpetbaggers are Political Candidates who seek election in area without local connection
12. Equal Rights changes for former slaves effectivelyended after Reconstruction
